Full text feed vs summary feed

In WordPress dashboard, you can select whether to show full text or summary for your blog rss feed. Now, we are going to see what are the differences between full text and summary feed and which one gives more advantages.

1. Full text feed

If you select full text feed, your rss subscribers can read the whole blog entries using any types of rss reader. Your blog readers don’t necessarily need to open your blog just to check out whether there are new entries posted. They can read it on desktops, web, iPhones etc and it is far more convenient than reading in browser.

However, there are high chances that the page views of your blog will be decreased and it’s really bad for blog monetization. People will only read your blog using rss reader and not visiting the main blog, causing less traffics and less chance for your blog ads to get clicked.

2. Summary feed

Summary feed will only show the text summaries of your blog entries. No media will be shown, such as videos, audios and even images.

The advantage of summary feed is that when you posts new blog entries, your feed subscriber will need to click on the link in order to read the full entries in your main blog. It means more page views will be generated from the feed links.

But, the bad things is summary feed will discourage people from subscribing your feed at the first place. Reading a summary feed is not interesting at all and clicking on the link just to read the full blog entries are pain for some people.

You have a chance of getting higher page views and more clicks, but in the same time you may lose some potential rss subscribers.

3. Conclusions?

I prefer to use full text feed rather than using summary feed. It is very important for you to make your blog readers feel convenient to read your blog entries. Also, to become a successful blog, you need a strong numbers of rss subscribers too.
