Windows Live Writer 2010 review

I’ve currently using Windows Live Writer 2010 beta for writing blogs and it’s really awesome.

Now we will see what are the new features that comes with this latest 2010 version of Windows Live Writer.

1. Ribbon UI

WLW 2010 now sports a classy and intuitive Ribbon UI, very much the same as other Microsoft software such as Office 2010, Paint and Wordpad. The old-school style menu is now gone, and with ribbon UI using this software will make your tasks easier.

The categories, tags and date are now moved to top. Formatting also become easier because you can now change the text font, font size and color from the ribbon menu.

2. More advanced insert menu

You can insert hyperlink, picture, video, photo album, maps from bing and also emoticon.

As for inserting video, you can select whether to embed videos from websites or you can also upload local video file to youtube. A very nice addition making sharing videos more easier.

Inserting Map using Bing Map service. It’s my first time trying Bing Map though.

Inserting inline emoticon is now possible without the need to install any 3rd party plugins. Might be using this emoticon in my blog writings soon.

As for inserting picture and picture editing, there’s no significant new features added except it will much easier to use thanks to ribbon ui.

3. Compatibility with older plugins

Well, all my previously installed plugins such as Flickr Image and Instant Imageshack seems to works fine with this latest Windows Live Writer 2010.

+1 for maintaining good compatibilities with older WLW plugins.

4. Conclusion

I really like Windows Live Writer 2010 as it makes my blogging task a lot easier and efficient. The uses of ribbon ui also most welcomed.

However, I would really like to see the edit picture features will be enhanced like the edit picture features in Office 2010. They should also consider adding native Google Maps, Facebook and Twitter integration.

Since this version I’m using is still beta, hopefully that some additional new features will be added in the final version.
